Why Your Child Benefits from Learning Different Swim Strokes
Your child can hold their own in the water and doesn’t seem interested in becoming an Olympic swimmer or having a career in swimming…so why is it important for her to learn different swim strokes?
Here are just a few reasons why it’s important to learn different swim strokes when learning to swim at Goldfish Swim School:
Taking on challenges
At Goldfish Swim School, our curriculum is specifically designed for each age group and level, and the mastering of certain skills brings forth the challenge of introducing harder things. For instance, learning how to swim freestyle comes in handy when learning how to do butterfly strokes.
It’s also one of those things that transfers well into life: Kids learn how to dive right in and accept those challenges, no matter how daunting they may seem. It’s exciting to know that there’s something more difficult coming up next to try.
Meeting goals
In order to advance to the next swim level at Goldfish Swim School, kids have to meet their goals. Thanks to the Science of SwimPlay, we know kids learn through guided play and a safe environment. We know just the right mix of fun and practice to help them achieve those goals: Like learning how to do the backstroke after mastering the building blocks leading up to it.
And, because they’ve learned through swimming that they can achieve the goals set before them – and see extraordinary results – kids gain the confidence to go ahead and make waves in life.
Building muscles and skills
Each different swim stroke uses different muscles to varying degrees. Because swimming uses all muscle groups, it helps athletes in all sports by strengthening areas of the body that may not otherwise be exercised frequently.
For some swim strokes, kicking is more powerful than others. One stroke may focus more on shoulders, and another one may focus more on back muscles. Each type of stroke then, in turn, helps the other type of stroke by building up the muscles that are used secondary.
Finding the best one
In some cases, kids will be good at swimming one kind of stroke but might not be good at others. By learning how to swim different strokes, kids have the chance to find out what they excel at, and we can encourage that and celebrate.
We want your kids to have a GOLDEN experience every time at Goldfish Swim School, and sometimes one skill just isn’t making them as excited. That’s OK, and we will work to find what works best for your little one.
Water safety
One key principle of learning to swim at Goldfish Swim School is that our instructors use integrity, compassion and trust to teach children how to be safer in and around the water. We are committed to doing everything we can to drastically reduce instances of drowning, and learning different swim strokes helps kids be more prepared in any type of potential emergency situation.
What if your child is struggling to breathe and can’t touch the bottom, or got pulled by a strong current? What if she saw someone else who needed help in the water? Each situation could benefit from a different type of swim stroke to make it easier for your child to reach safety. Knowing how to do each stroke means your child doesn’t have to hesitate; she will just instinctively use the stroke that seems most appropriate at the moment.
